A Brief Discussion on the Physical and Chemical Properties and Applications of Sodium Pyrophosphate
Source:   Author:

Sodium pyrophosphate is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula Na4P2O7. It is a white crystalline powder that easily absorbs moisture and deliquescence in air. It is soluble in water but insoluble in ethanol and other organic solvents. Strong chelating ability with metal ions such as Cu2+, Fe3+, Mn2+, etc. The aqueous solution is stable below 70 ℃, and when boiled, it hydrolyzes into disodium hydrogen phosphate

White powder or crystal. Relative density 2.534, melting point 980 ℃. Colorless transparent crystal or white crystalline powder. Easy to dissolve in water, the solubility in 100g of water at 20 ℃ is 6.23g, and its aqueous solution is alkaline; Insoluble in alcohol. The aqueous solution is stable below 70 ℃, but when boiled, it hydrolyzes into disodium hydrogen phosphate. It is easy to absorb moisture and deliquescence in the air. Can form complexes with alkaline earth metal ions; When encountering Ag+, white silver pyrophosphate is generated.

Can undergo complexation reactions with metal ions. The pH value of its 1% aqueous solution is 10.0-10.2. It has the same properties as ordinary polyphosphates, including emulsification, dispersibility, anti fat oxidation, and improved protein adhesion. It also has the ability to inhibit food oxidation and fermentation at high pH values.

The electroplating industry is used to prepare electroplating solutions, which can form complexes with iron. The woolen industry uses it as a degreaser and bleaching agent for wool. The paper industry is used for bleaching paper and plant fibers. Used in the printing and dyeing industry as an auxiliary agent for printing, dyeing, and bleaching. Used as a toothpaste additive in the daily chemical industry, it can form colloids with calcium hydrogen phosphate and play a stabilizing role. It can also be used in the synthesis of detergents and the production of shampoo and other products. Used as a water softener in water treatment. Used as a rust remover in mechanical processing. Used as a dispersant and emulsifier in chemical production. It can also be used as a water treatment agent, petroleum drilling, and in the food industry as a quality improver, emulsifier, buffering agent, chelating agent, etc.

Sodium pyrophosphate not only has the function of softening water, but also can dissolve insoluble salts of calcium and magnesium. For example, in clothing fibers, dirt formed by insoluble calcium soaps or other metal soaps can dissolve them again and improve their cleaning ability. In addition, sodium pyrophosphate has a reverse flocculation effect, which causes the oil to emulsify, which is called gel solubility. It can also further reduce the surface tension and interfacial tension of the surfactant solution, playing a washing aid role.
